We Are The Characters of Halifax is a public art project and personal investigation into the dynamics of community building, in a post-pandemic, digital-centric era. When the vast majority of your day-to-day cultural and social interactions occur in an internet microcosm, how do you go about building in-person community?

This project takes the approach of community recruitment through the use of pop-culture and media tropes that feed and have been fed by 21st century youth culture, aiming to attract passers-by who may also find value in these romanticized identifiers. It is an attempt to discover if the same tools for personal identity that we adopt from online spaces, can be applied in a physical landscape to create organic offline interactions.

Flyers

Inspired by pre social media methods of community advertising, these tear-off flyers encourage participants to select and embrace a pseudonym that relates back to a broad character trope. The choice of collaged imagery is based in crafting practices, and other forms of creation that rely on the practice of physical intention and material gathering, rather than the primary use of digital tools.

The project was implemented through areas of Halifax frequented by the artist, who would thus have the opportunity to organically monitor and reach individuals who associate the same streets, establishments, and physical markers with their home. Their placement in areas primarily used for commute gives the audience the opportunity to take a moment to engage with their surroundings and be a part of a larger conversation of communal spaces.
